IIT Guwahati the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established under the Institutes of Technology (Amemnded) Act 1994. IITG has now put in place of a world-class infrastructure and state-of-theart facilities for its academic and research programmes, both in the classical areas of science, technology and humanities and in various new and emerging areas.
Its activities are supported through eleven(11) academic departments and three(3) inter-disciplinery centres covering all major disciplines in engineering, science and humanities. Located on the north bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra, the pictureque 275 hectare campus area combines all the facilities for a modern township in a natural setting which gives which gives a glimpse of the natural flora and fauna of the region. IITG is conveniently accessible by road,rail and air and is situated about 20 km away from Guwahati city.
The 96000 sqm Academci Complex houses the academic and research facilities of the institute, including all its departments, centres, laboratories, classrooms and lecture halls. A 1500 capacity auditorium and a Conference Centre are located nearby. Its Central Library is the central hub for academic and research. The library has a building of its own with a collection of more than 1,50,000 books and journal and more than 2,600 online journals and magazines.
