Studentship Category, Mode of Study and Related Requirements for M.Tech Program

Regular with GATE:

*      The candidates under this category must have valid GATE score in admissible test paper (See Table-1).

*      They pursue M.Tech. programme at the Institute on full time basis.

*      They are entitled to receive Financial Assistance in the form of Institute Scholarship at the rate of Rs.12400/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) as per the governing rules subject to satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory performance in assigned teaching assistant duty.

*      The final admission to the candidates under this category is based on

o   either 100% weightage to the performance in GATE and with/ without counselling,

o   or 70% weightage to the performance in GATE and 30% weightage to other components like performance in written test and/ or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credential of the candidates, etc.

Regular & IIT BTech without GATE:

*      The candidates under this category must have B.Tech. degree from one of IITs with a minimum CPI of 8.0 in a 10-point scale.

*      They pursue M.Tech. programme at the Institute on full time basis.

*      They are exempted from the requirement of valid GATE score.

*      They are entitled to receive Financial Assistance in the form of Institute Scholarship at the rate of Rs.12,400/- per month (tenable for a maximum period of 24 months) as per the governing rules subject to satisfactory academic progress and satisfactory performance in assigned teaching assistant duty.

*      The final admission to the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credential of the candidates, etc.

Sponsored & Full Time without GATE:

*      The candidates under this category are sponsored (with salary and study leave for 24 months) by a recognized R&D organization, academic institution, governmental organization or industry for doing M.Tech. at IIT Guwahati.

*      They pursue M.Tech. programme at the Institute on full time basis.

*      The candidate under this category must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least 2 (two) years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.

*      They are not entitled to receive any financial assistance from the Institute.

*      They should submit Sponsorship Letter in prescribed format (See: Sponsorship Letter Format) from the employer along with the application. The application without Sponsorship Letter will NOT be considered.

*      The final admission to the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

Employed & Part Time without GATE:

*      The candidates under this category are professionally employed personnel (including regular employees of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes in the first year at the Institute while employed. These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute.

*      They pursue M.Tech. programme at the Institute on part time basis.

*      The candidate under this category must be a regular employee of his/her organization with at least 2 (two) years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.

*      They are not entitled to receive any financial assistance from the Institute.

*      They should submit No Objection Certificate in prescribed format (See: NOC Format) from the employer along with the application. The application without No Objection Certificate will NOT be considered.

*      The final admission to the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

Project Staff & Part Time without GATE:

*      The candidates under this category are presently working on sponsored R&D projects in IIT Guwahati.

*      They pursue M.Tech. programme at the Institute on part time basis.

*      The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year.

*      They are not entitled to receive Institute Scholarship from the Institute.

*      They should submit No Objection Certificate in prescribed format (See: IITG-NOC Format) from IIT Guwahati (PI and Dean-R&D) along with the application. The application without No Objection Certificate will NOT be considered.

*      The final admission to the candidates under this category is based on the performance in the written test and / or interview conducted by the concerned academic department/ center, academic credentials of the candidates, etc.

Foreign Students:

The applications of sponsored or self-financed foreign national candidates will also be considered for admission to the MTech Programme. For prescribed academic criteria, please see the eligibility criteria for MTech programme. GATE/CEED qualification is not compulsory. The desirous foreign nationals will submit their complete bio-data with regard to their academic qualifications indicating clearly (1) the class obtained, (2) percentage of marks where marks are awarded and Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) or equivalent where grades are awarded, and (3) proficiency in English.

Fees: Foreign students from countries under South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) have to pay US Dollars (USD) 2,000/- or equivalent amount as Tuition Fees every year and other Academic, Hostel and Mess related Fees every semester. For students from non-SAARC countries, the Tuition Fee is USD 4,000/- or equivalent amount and also they have to pay other Academic, Hostel and Mess related Fees.

Accommodation: Foreign students can stay in the hostels along with Indian students. The hostel rooms are single-seated. Limited number of quarter-type accommodation for married students is also available.

Important Note:

For the academic programmes M.Tech in Data Science and M.Tech. in Food Science and Technology, the Non-Regular studentship category "Sponsored & Full Time without GATE", "Employed & Part Time without GATE", and "Project Staff & Part Time without GATE" are NOT available.

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Electronics and Electrical Engineering

Qualifying Degree: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering / Electronics Engineering or Equivalent or M.Sc.(Electronics) or Graduates (AMIETE) enrolled upto 31.05.2013 from Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) in Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering.

 

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Mechanical Engineering

Qualifying Degree: Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area.

Civil Engineering

Qualifying Degree & Minimum Marks: For all specializations (other than Earth System Science and Engineering), Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 60% of marks.

 

Qualifying Degree & Minimum Marks: For Earth System Science and Engineering specialization, four-year Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering/Petroleum Engineering/ Mining Engineering/ Mineral Engineering/ Geoscience Engineering/Agriculture Engineering/Engineering Physics (or equivalent)/ Engineering Mathematics (or equivalent) with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 60% of marks OR Master of Science degree in Geology (or equivalent)/ Geophysics (or equivalent)/ Physics, Soil Physics with a minimum CPI of 6.0 or 60% of marks OR Master of Science degree in Mathematics/ Chemistry and allied areas in natural sciences with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 65% marks.

Biotechnology

Qualifying Degree: Master's degree in Science or four year Bachelor's degree in Engineering or technology, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later.

 

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Chemical Engineering

Bachelor's degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area (having Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, and Process Control, as subjects in undergraduate programme).

 

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Rural Technology

Qualifying Degree: B.E./ B.Tech./ M.Sc. in any discipline.

 

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Data Science

Qualifying Degree: B.E./ B.Tech./ M.Sc./ MCA/ Four year B.S. degrees or equivalent in any engineering/ science discipline.

 

Minimum Marks: Minimum CPI of 6.0 in a 10-point scale or a minimum of 60% of total / aggregate marks in Qualifying Degree.

Food Science & Technology

Qualifying Degree:

Four Year Bachelors' Degree in Engineering/ Technology/ Science or equivalent in one of the following disciplines (or in equivalent disciplines)

Relaxation in Minimum Marks for SC/ ST/ PwD candidates:

The minimum marks requirement is relaxed by lowering 0.5 in CPI or 5% in marks for SC/ ST/ PwD candidates.

 

Reservation of Seats:

Seats are reserved for Indian Nationals under the categories, SC/ ST/ OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/ Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and PwD (Persons with Disability) according to the Government of India rules.
