The machine lab is equipped with all kinds of AC and DC motors and generators required for undergraduate lab session (EE380) and research activities in the field. For the better understanding of control of various motors lab also has braking and drive modules for some motors.

Dual Mechanical Port Motor Based Electric Vehicle Power Train

The project aims at developing a prototype of power train for Electric Vehicle (EV) using a Dual Mechanical Port (DMP) motor. The DMP that will be investigated is a combination of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) and Induction Machine (IM). With the combination of these two motor topologies it is expected that the new motor will have high power density. The power train will be powered by an energy pack consisting of super capacitors and batteries. A scaled down prototype will be developed and tested using Hardware in Loop (HIL) technique.

Losses in Induction Machines

The main aim of the project is to analyze different losses occurring during operation of an induction motor and devise practical methods to estimate them precisely.

Lab Experiments

  1. 1: To perform no load test and blocked rotor test on a three phase squirrel cage induction motor and write its equivalent circuit referred to the stator.
  2. To perform no load test and blocked rotor test on a three phase squirrel cage induction motor and write its equivalent circuit referred to the stator
  3. To perform load test on a single-phase induction motor and determine its torque-speed characteristics.
  4. To determine the effective efficiency and speed characteristic of DC shunt motor.
  5. To perform load test on a three phase squirrel cage induction motor and determine its torque-slip characteristics.
  6. To perform a load test on the synchronous generator for unity power factor load and to draw the terminal voltage versus load current characteristics.
  7. Determination of the equivalent circuit parameters of a single phase transformer.
  8. To perform no-load and blocked rotor tests on a single phase capacitor start induction motor and determine its equivalent circuit.
  9. To determine the effective efficiency and speed characteristic of DC series motor.
  10. To determine the no load characteristic of shunt excited DC generators.
  11. To determine the no load characteristic of the separately excited DC generator.
