“The fuel in the earth will be exhausted in a thousand or more years, and its mineral wealth, but man will find substitutes for these in the winds, the waves, the sun's heat, and so forth.„
- John Burroughs From Under the Apple-Trees (1916), 308.
Welcome to the Green Office at IIT Guwahati. Started on Nov 30, 2013, the Green Office at IIT Guwahati fosters to serve as a central node for the integration of thoughts and actions putforth by the Administration, Faculty, Staff and Students in the field of green sciences and technology. The central goal of the Green Office, IITG is to target and implement sustainable green solutions in the diverse fields of energy efficiency and waste management.
IIT Guwahati is blessed with nature's bounty. Located within the close proximity of the mighty Brahmaputra, the lush green ambience of campus has mountains, ponds and wild life as important landmarks. Probably, no other IIT in India is blessed with such natural ambience. The rich and varied green landscape of IIT Guwahati continues to serve as a rich source of inspiration to take up the dynamic challenges that exist in the development and implementation of green technologies.
Conceptually, green R&D poses an interesting framework in terms of the diversity and depth of target objectives and available technical and monetary resources. Going green needs a strong will and determination. While many green solutions exist, only few are sustainable. Further, among these, even fewer can be implemented at IIT Guwahati due to stringent technical constraints. Therefore, the teams working at Green Office, IIT Guwahati will have the immense satisfaction and pride to put forth an enthusiastic roadmap for IITG specific green science and technology.
IIT Guwahati being one of the foremost technical institutions in the North-east India has a key role to play in fostering the concept of sustainable green solutions. While fewer examples of green technology implementation at various locations in the North east India is presently conveyed through media and other communication resources, their success stories are even more important from the context of long term sustainability. It is this issue that IIT Guwahati wishes to emphasize at the Green Office to address North-east specific Green R&D.
