27th to 31st January, 2025
Prof. Tomohiko Sakao is an outstanding researcher in the field of Product Service System (PSS). He has been active in both carrying out projects with industry and publishing academic articles. He has published the highest number of articles in the PSS area worldwide, which is clear evidence his academic influence and expertise in the field. After studying at the University of Tokyo, he worked at Mitsubishi Research Inst., Inc. in Tokyo for 8 full years, where he gained valuable industry experience before beginning his academic career. He has developed scientific methods in PSS that have been utilized and implemented at various manufacturing companies in countries like Sweden, Japan, and Germany. His research has been financed by European Union, Mistra (The Swedish foundation for strategic environmental research), Siemens, Sveriges Ingenjörer (The Swedish Association of Graduate Engineers), Tekniska verken in Linköping, Toyota, and VINNOVA (The Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems). He is holding 10 patents in mechatronics control and intelligent machinery.
Prof. Pratul C Kalita has widespread Industrial and Academic experience in the field of design, technology and strategic management. His research interests are Design Management, Design Methods, Product Service Systems, Service and Systems Design and Design Strategy. He has provided research and consultancy services to Government of India, Government of Assam and many business organizations of repute. He obtained PhD in Design from Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati in the area of Design Management. Prior to his PhD, he did Bachelor of Engineering in Production Engineering and Management from National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur, followed by Master of Marketing Management from Pondicherry University. He has been instrumental in establishment of industry institute partnership in the North Eastern region of India. He is a member of Indian Chamber of Commerce
A Product Service System (PSS) is an integrated offering of products and services. A manufacturer is facing opportunities to provide a PSS, taking responsibility for and control of larger ranges in a value network or a business ecosystem and thereby enhancing business competitiveness and chances for innovations. The importance of value co-creation through PSSs has increased significantly along with the social expectations related to sustainability and the emergence of digitalization and smart technologies. However, carrying out PSS design requires communication, cooperation, and collaboration between different functions to exploit the full potential: what and how to design needs to be adapted from conventional product design. PSS design in industry involves a variety of challenges, requiring the organization's strategic decisions to carry out effective design management. Therefore, PSS design provides businesses with a golden opportunity – if a business manages the challenges properly, significant gains are expected economically, environmentally and socially.
This is an advanced course in PSS design. The prime focus of the course is in methods and tools of PSS design in the context of design and technology management. This course provides the participants with a globally unique opportunity to learn PSS design from Prof. Tomohiko Sakao of Linköping University, Sweden, who is among the top globally renowned scholars and pioneers in PSS design, with contribution by Prof. Pratul Chandra Kalita supporting the learning with a design management perspective emphasizing Indian contexts. Prof. Sakao has co-developed insights on PSS design with many enterprises (especially, large multinational manufacturers) in Europe. He will share his broad and deep knowledge with business relevance and broad applicability that has been developed from scientific research. Why, what, and how of user centric PSS design will be covered. Also, smart PSSs through digitalization, where technology acceptance is a major issue, will be discussed. Among others, avoiding design fixation and service design trap is emphasized as key to successful PSS design management. Further, models, methods and tools for PSS design that Prof. Sakao has co-developed, tested, and evaluated in industrial environments will be introduced. Toolkits for design and development of smart PSSs will be discussed in detail by Prof. Kalita. The tool-kits will primarily focus on creative idea generation for PSS, where the role of design management takes the lead.
Executive, manager, designer, engineer and researcher from design, manufacturing, consultancy, service and government organizations including R&D laboratories.
Student at all levels (M.Des, MBA, M.Tech, PhD, B.Tech 6th semester and above) or Faculty from reputed academic institutions and technical institutions.
Number of participants for the course will be limited to fifty.
