Title: Elements of Indian Knowledge Systems

Description:

The course is designed as an elective course for the students pursuing their Ph.D. in the Indian Knowledge System and Final year Bachelors students from various departments. This course provides a good understanding on five main areas of traditional Indian knowledge that are Philosophy, Indian Calendar System, Indian Architecture, Metallurgy, and Medicinal systems. The knowledge of celestial bodies, time, seasons, etc. is included in the Indian Calendar System; the extraction of metals, crucibles, bell-metals etc. will be discussed in the Metallurgy section. Topics related to Ayurveda will be discussed under the Medicinal systems while Indian Architecture will cover parts of soil classifications and testing, plot selection, temple architecture, etc. Indian Philosophy deals with area such as Indian logic, metaphysics, epistemology etc. All these broad areas will be covered in a contemporary manner keeping Indian knowledge as the base.

Syllabus:

Philosophy: Indian logic, Metaphysics, Epistemology; Indian Calendar: Time reckoning, Elements of Almanac, Planets, Zodiac; Indian Architecture: Housing Architecture, Temple Architecture, Concept of directionality, Classification of land, Identifying suitable land and different methods; Metallurgy: Preparation of metal powder, Crucibles, Design of machines, Metals for making idols; Medicine: Eight Specialties in Ayurveda, Parts of human body, Tridosha, Diseases classification.
