Wireless Power Transfer (WPT)
Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) system is used to transfer power from a primary winding to an electrically isolated secondary winding. This type of charging system has number of advantages such as no sparking, no short circuits, no contact resistances, no wear and tear on the electrical contact, and they are unaffected by dirt, dust, and water. Due to such advantages, WPT system is gaining more popularity in recent years. The application of this technology can be found in electric vehicle charging. WPT system is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, where the energy from the primary to the secondary is transferred through the air. The electromagnetic induction will be higher for high-frequency current supplied to the coil. With the developments in power electronics switches, it is easy to get high-frequency current, therefore WPT has found much success.
