This book is a radical reevaluation of the dominant civilizational narratives on the ‘tribes’ that normally demonize them as ‘nuisance’ to the ‘civilized’ valley states. Taking a long view approach, and following the grand narratives of recent scholarship on the hill people, this book looks at the history of Northeast India highland massif as the ‘history of deliberate and reactive statelessness’.
