    Objective
Fiber-optics has transformed, and continues to transform handling of information and transformed the telecommunications to the present day's terabit communication links. In addition, advancements of this technology and the related components have left considerable impact on totally different area- termed as Sensing, which spans but not limited to civil, mechanical, aeronautical, biochemical engineering. Today, fiber optics has emerged to a level where it plays key role in almost all of the relevant engineering applications. And hence, with the growing demand of complex and multi-facet applications of optical fiber and the need for based ultra sensitive devices, a wide area of application oriented research and development needs to be explored. Thus, it is extremely important to have a deep understanding of the fundamental and salient features behind this technology, which is key to design/development for highly accurate and sensitive application requirements. Proposed short term program will provide a detailed introduction to the fundamentals of fiber-optics along with some of the salient scopes including the present and futuristic R&D to young and established teachers/researchers/engineers. It will also include hand-on laboratory exposure to some of the special experimental techniques in the fiber-optics for better understanding of concepts and applications.

    Eligibility
The course is open to the faculty members/researchers of AICTE approved engineering colleges, practicing engineers from industries and government organizations/departments. No course fee would be charged for participants sponsored by AICTE approved institutions. Participants from industries and government organizations/departments are required to pay a course fee of Rs 5000/- and Rs 2500/- respectively. The payment is to be made by demand draft drawn on any Nationalized Bank in favor of QIP, IIT Guwahati, payable at Guwahati.

    About IIT Guwahati
Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, the sixth member of the IIT fraternity, was established in 1994. the academic program of IIT Guwahati commenced in 1995. At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines. Within a short period of time, IIT Guwahati has been able to build up the necessary infrastructure for carrying out advanced research and has been equipped with state-of-the-art engineering and scientific instruments. IIT Guwahati campus stands on a sprawling 285 hectares plot of land on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra. The campus is about 25 Km. from the heart of the city. With the majestic Brahmaputra on one side, and with hills and vast open spaces on the others, the campus provides an ideal setting for learning. The city of Guwahati is the gateway to the NE region and connected to many major cities in the country by rail and air. The weather during winter use to be pleasant with temperature varying between 15-20 degrees Celsius.
