SIMA  NAYAK

Sima Nayak is a Research Scholar (Ph.D.) in the department of Mechanical Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, India. Her academic identities include Master's degree (M.Tech) from National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela, India in "Cryogenic and Vaccum Technology" & Bachelor's Degree (B.Tech) in "Mechanical Engineering" from Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) Burla, Odisha. Prior to these, her technological journey was initiated through the Diploma course in "Mechanical Engineering" from Jharsuguda Engineering School (JES), Odisha. She joined IIT Guwahati in December 2020 and continuing her research activities under the supervision of Prof. Niranjan Sahoo. It is worth mentioning that, she is a recipient of the prestigious Prime Minister's Research Fellowship (PMRF). Her research interests include measurement diagnostics of high-speed flows and instrumentation techniques for impulsive force and heat flux measurement.

Research Objective

My current research interests related high speed flow diagnostics includes:

  • Calculation of surface heat flux and force
  • Fabrication of coaxial thermal probe and aerodynamic model
  • Implementation of various contemporary techniques for force and heat flux recovery

The high-speed aerodynamic vehicles often come across the influence of impulsive loads due to generation of shock waves at supersonic or hypersonic speeds. Similar force and heat loads are observed in intercontinental missiles, new generation air crafts, and launch vehicles etc. These impulsive forces and added heat fluxes cause a serious damage on the aerostructure. So the prior assessment such parameters need to be carried out for the design and modification of the atmospheric vehicles. Therefore, experiments are being carried out to get the information about the magnitude and nature of such forces and heat fluxes by creating similar environments in shock tubes and shock tunnels with the help of prototypes. Due to the high-speed nature of the flow of the vehicles, some selective sensors are capable in capturing the flow information. For this some highly efficient sensors are fabricated in house to measure the thermal loads and impulsive force as well as some modern recovery techniques are developed for the calculation of force and heat loads.
