Research Topic: Studies in Brand decision making using Design strategies.

Abstract: In this Research, fast moving consumer goods (FMCGs) are being studied with respect to the role and influence  that Design ( Package Form, Graphics, Display, and Sensory Experience)  plays in user decision making as a result of Perception formation  at the retail buying spot.  Experimental studies are intended to find out how User mental models could aid in formulating Design Strategy based on Design variables. Smart Interactive Packaging are emerging as the future in FMCGs as well as in Food retaining sector. EMR studies and experiential tests are being used to capture the mental model of users as well as their preferences.

Research Topic: GUI designing for IOT enabled devices using semantic and Usability approach in the Indian context.

Abstract: Product graphical user interfaces (GUI) are the portals for the human machine interaction, in our day to day lives we come across several products such as mobile phones, smart meters, music players etc. with graphical user interfaces as the way to interact with them. These interfaces are designed to serve the several user groups across the globe. Whilst the purpose is to communicate the meaning in the best way possible and creating a bond with their users, yet we see many interfaces irritate us at some point of time and become ambiguous to operate. There could be several reasons for such unpleasant experiences. Through the product semantic and usability studies on Internet of Things (IOT) enabled smart meters this research work is trying to explore the meaning related issues, usability problems of User interface in the Indian scenario with user groups and proposing the heuristics for designing the IOT enabled devices.

Areas of Interest: Product semantics, User Interface Design, Usability Engineering, User experience Design, Artificial Intelligence.

Research Topic: Tacit Knowledge Capture and its Use in Conservation of Traditional Crafts and Designs.

Abstract: Crafts industry is largely dependent on skills of highly proficient employees. Art Craft and to some limited extent Design Traditions and practices are transferred from one generation to another by an internship and are often confined to families or communities. Even though there has been modernization in the crafts industry the requirements and supply for highly skilled craftsmen have not kept pace with demand. Several instances of a line of crafts having died out because there being very few craftsmen willing to continue or train new interns which have come to light. Continuing the traditions is becoming difficult besides gaps in documentation. With a decrease in artisan numbers and onslaught of mechanization & mass production crafts, accompanying skills and more important tacit knowledge surrounding them are likely to lose out. This thesis work posits that if there is a way to capture and preserve as well as transfer tacit knowledge of the craftsmen into some form of reusable documentation it is possible to replicate and preserve such knowledge and use it in the future. If ‘Tacit knowledge’ can be captured into digital form it is expected to remain safe for centuries.

Areas of Interest: Product Design, Crafts and Arts, Tacit Knowledge Management, Manufacturing and Automation, Computer Aided Design.
