Research Interest

Dr. Senthilmurugan Subbiah is a highly accomplished academic and researcher in the field of chemical engineering, with a particular focus on the water and energy nexus. Currently, he serves as a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) in Assam, India. In October 2022, Dr. Subbiah was appointed as the Chairperson of the IITG - Technology Incubation Centre (IITG-TIC), demonstrating his commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainable development.

Dr. Senthilmurugan’s research interests span a wide range of topics related to water and energy management, including modeling and optimization, process design and operation of membrane separation processes, waste and wastewater treatment (WWWT) for process industries, water management for oil and gas upstream, smart water grid, waste-to-energy technologies, and novel desalination technologies. Additionally, his work encompasses energy storage, smart microgrids, and air purification systems, reflecting his dedication to addressing pressing global environmental challenges.

Throughout his career, Dr. Senthilmurugan has made significant contributions to his field, with 31 patent applications, 4 granted US patents, 71 journal publications, 5 book chapters, 2 industrial magazine articles, and 32 conference papers to his name. From 2014 to 2022, he has successfully executed 37 projects with a total funding of 15 crores, of which 8 crores were obtained from industry partners and the remaining from government agencies.

Prior to his current role at IITG, Dr. Senthilmurugan worked at ABB India, Eureka Forbes Product Development Center, and Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), where he honed his skills in research, development, and technology management.

Dr. Senthilmurugan’s academic journey began with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Chemical Engineering from Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, India. He then pursued a Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degree in Process Engineering and Design with a minor in Chemical Engineering from IIT Delhi, where he also completed his Ph.D. in Membrane Science and Engineering with a minor in Chemical Engineering.

As an educator and researcher, Dr. Senthilmurugan is dedicated to fostering an environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and innovation among his students. His extensive knowledge and passion for research have led to numerous publications in prestigious journals, as well as collaborations with international institutions and industry partners. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Subbiah actively mentors and advises students, helping them navigate the complexities of academia and prepare them for future career opportunities.
