Research Overview
Professor Saikia has developed several methodologies for the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds using Prins and ene cyclization reactions. Apart from Prins and ene cyclization reactions, intramolecular cyclization reactions of oxygen and nitrogen tethered alkyne/alkenol/thioalkenols are also considered for the synthesis of various heterocyclic compounds. These methodologies have been used for the synthesis of biologically active molecules and natural products. Few oxabicyclic molecules, oxabicyclo[3.3.1]nonanones are found to have antileishmanial activity with IC50 values ranging from 4.95 – 19.52. One of the oxabicyclic compounds PS-203 is found to be effective against a miltefosine-unresponsive strain of the parasite. The combination of hydroxy derivative of PS-203 namely PS-207 with miltefosine showed a synergic effect against the parasite. Some of the natural products and biologically active compounds synthesized using his methodologies are depicted below.
