Background:
The purpose of Mathematics in engineering education is to inculcate in the budding engineers the mathematical competence which is the ability to understand, analyze and use mathematics in a variety of contexts and situations. There is a debate about what kind of mathematics is appropriate for engineers. Any engineering curriculum revision targets to further enhance the relevance of mathematics while adapting to the needs of 21st century. On the other hand, engineering students often complain that mathematics is more abstract, over-stuffed and less relevant to their everyday lives. So, mathematics pedagogy certainly needs attention, moving from text based and factual recall to more inquiry based learning and towards exploratory learning.
Course Objectives:
- To explore the connections of mathematical foundation courses (Algebra, Calculus and Differential Equations) to the mathematics in the later engineering subjects.
- To provide platform for the exchange of ideas, practices and pedagogy in the mathematics education in engineering and technical institutions.
Course Contents:
- Mathematics for Engineering Education - Perspectives of Mathematicians
- Mathematics for Engineering Education - Perspectives of Engineers and Technologists
- Mathematics pedagogy adapting to the needs of 21st century
Resource Persons:
Faculty members of IIT Guwahati and guest faculty members from other premier institutions will deliver lectures.
