HIMDHARA is a citizen science–driven, indigenous Geo-AI platform aimed at strengthening flash flood disaster management in Himalayan regions through community participation and advanced digital technologies. It establishes a trained local volunteer network called HimMitra, consisting of residents from vulnerable mountain areas who assist in real-time environmental monitoring and rapid disaster response. The platform integrates in-situ sensing, satellite data, and resilient communication systems to deliver real-time intelligence and early warnings for flash floods and related hazards. By leveraging cloud-based data assimilation, HIMDHARA enhances situational awareness and improves early warning capabilities in remote terrains. It supports continuous monitoring of river systems, capturing water levels, quality, and field conditions through both human and sensor-based inputs. The system also enables predictive modeling, rapid damage assessment using drones and ground observations, and ensures uninterrupted communication through multi-layer networks.
HIMDHARA was showcased at HIM-CONNECT, an innovation platform launched by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, during the World Sustainable Development Summit 2026 organized by TERI. The initiative aims to accelerate sustainable technologies emerging from the Indian Himalayan Region by bridging research, policy, and industry.
During the event, the HIMDHARA framework attracted strong interest from industry leaders, research institutions, and policymakers. Its integrated approach combining Geo-AI, real-time sensing, and resilient communication systems was recognized for its potential in climate resilience, flood monitoring, and sustainable infrastructure planning.
A team of scientists and technical experts from the Namami Gange Programme visited IIT Guwahati to observe innovative river monitoring technologies developed under the Himdhara initiative. Researchers demonstrated sensor-based and IoT-enabled systems at field sites across Assam and Arunachal Pradesh for real-time river and watershed monitoring. The visit fostered technical discussions, knowledge exchange, and potential collaborations for advancing sustainable water resource management through indigenous technologies.
HIMDHARA has attracted interest from organizations across climate-tech, agriculture, energy, and sustainability sectors, highlighting its relevance as a scalable and multidisciplinary solution for environmental monitoring and climate resilience.
