Brief career profile

Prof. A. K. Sarma, Professor and former Head of Civil Engineering Department, was honoured with the prestigious B.P.Chaliha Chair Professor Position (2009-1018) by MoWR, Govt. of India. He served as Visiting Professor at Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. With 21 Ph.D. research scholars, addressing various problems in the field of Water Resources, Prof. Sarma has published more than 150 technical papers in Journals, Books and in Conf. Proceedings. The NPTEL video course on Hydraulic Engineering developed by Prof. Sarma entered into top 5 most visited courses. Till date, he has completed 22 sponsored research project and 65 consultancy projects from India and abroad. Prof. Sarma has extended his services as member of Advisory Committee of NDMA, Indian National Committee for Climate Change (INCCC), National Coordination Committee of National Institute of Hydrology (NIH), and Expert committee member of High Level Committee (HLC) of NITI Aayog constituted for Proper Management of Water Resources of NER. The mathematical model BRAHMA (Braided River Aid: Hydro-Morphological Analyser) developed by his research group is another remarkable contribution. MoUD sponsored Centre of Excellence for Integrated Landuse Planning and Water Resources Management, led by Prof. Sarma developed the concepts of optimal Ecological Management Practices (EMPs) and SAFE (Sustainable Accommodation through Feedback Evaluation) carrying capacity, which are successfully implemented in India and investigated for potential implementation in Costa-Rica for mitigating flood and erosion problem. Prof. Sarma is also a reviewer for several international and national journals of high repute. In addition, as an approved lyricist of All India Radio, Prof. Sarma has composed several songs, drama and musical features to bring scientific awareness among masses.
