Institute Profile
IIIT Dharwad is an Institute of National Importance set up in 2015 in Public-Private-Partnership mode between the Ministry of Education, Government of India, Government of Karnataka and industry partner Keonics under an Act of Parliament (23 of 2017). The Institute offers three BTech programs in Computer Science & Engineering, Data Science & Artificial Intelligence and Electronics & Communication Engineering and PhD programs. It is about to move to its spacious permanent campus of 60 acres near Dharwad (between Oct and Dec 2020). As a not-for-profit institute of higher learning in the area of Information Technology (IT), the primary objective of IIIT Dharwad is to address the skill gap in high-end information technology and thereby enable India to retain its global leadership role in IT and allied areas. The Institute’s Chairperson Smt. Sudha Murty, Board of Governors, and Senate constitute highly eminent leaders from administration, academia, and industry. They are instrumental in steering the institute in the right direction. IIIT Dharwad is a self-sustaining PPP Institute where all running expenses including salaries are met by the tuition and other fees paid by students.
Objectives of some of the research work undertaken:
-
To emerge amongst the foremost institutions in information technology and allied fields of knowledge in the global context.
-
To advance new knowledge and innovation in information technology and allied fields to empower the nation to the forefront in the global context.
-
To develop competent and capable youth imbued with the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship with the social and environmental orientation to meet the knowledge needs of the country and provide global leadership in information technology and allied fields.
-
To solve local problems using global technologies and solve global problems using local technologies across disciplines.
Faculty at IIIT-Dharwad:
IIIT Dharwad has faculty having rich experience in the field of Data Science, Signal Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Recommendation Systems, Applied Mathematics, Coding Theory, Natural Language processing, Computer Networks etc. The expertise and experience of the faculty are much capable of developing tools and techniques for improving management of surface and groundwater resources (including springs, stormwater, wetlands, lakes and coastal reservoirs). Machine Learning and Deep Learning techniques can be used for modelling water quality, accessing climate change impact for harvesting water efficiently from floods and rainfall runoff etc. The techniques can also help in deploying cyber physical system which can collect reliable data for accurate modelling.
Faculty have a wide range of research expertise and experience covering many areas of Information Technology including:
-
Data analytics, machine learning, and social network analysis.
-
Computer networks and security.
-
Knowledge management, information retrieval, ontology and semantic web technologies.
-
Digital signal processing and speech technologies.
-
Embedded systems, sensors, MEMS, nano technology and VLSI.
-
Robotics, unmanned vehicles, control and communication technologies.
-
Power electronics and alternative energy systems.
-
Quantum physics, material science and engineering.
-

Health & Family Welfare Service (HFWS) Project in brief:
Indian Institute of Information Technology (Triple-IT) Dharwad is in collaboration with Health and family welfare service (HFWS), GoK for designing “Unified architecture” to adopt interoperability between healthcare applications for seamless data transfer. The project is three years agreement between HFWS, GoK and IIIT Dharwad as knowledge partner. The proposed system enables a comprehensive patient data from different hospitals and facilities that can be viewed as information on the application dashboard. Further the architecture assures the secured data integrity across the systems and provides a single healthcare data source.
Water for Life:
With the theme of “Water for Life” we need to monitor and safeguard the underground water for the future generation. Sustainable use of underground water is challenging. It not taken enough care currently, next younger generation shall be in great problem. Enabling the advance technology can make it possible for monitoring and predicting for necessary measures. The machine learning framework with the Internet of Things (IOT) can model the process to make the system intelligent for automatic gathering of information and predict the necessary action to be taken. As our Institute has a good number of young faculty with required expertise and interest in the areas related to AIWC initiative, we wish to be knowledge partners in this joint venture.
