Emergence of Data
The digital interfaces of the modern world still rely on old
metaphors and action grammars. The usage of digital systems however has
evolved exponentially. This project is about the potential of
data as art, as information, and as an interface.

Pursuing sound and image as forms of data, the exploration investigates their emergent possibilities. The journey explores data as content, an ever expanding database contributed by a global user base; and as an interface, a representation of a non tangible medium of reflection and control. This project started as an investigative enquiry in data and its implications. The explorations went hand in hand with the investigation. Inspired by the works of Lev Manovich, Aaron Koblin, Ryoji Ikeda to name a few, the explorations progressed from audioreactive geometries to a series of tools / frameworks that can be applied to sound and images. The database maybe static, for eg. movies and songs; or dynamic, for eg. realtime audio & image via mic and the camera.
Sonicwatch is a conceptual interface based on the experimental models, visualising sound information and the manipulation of incoming sound's amplitude, frequency, loudness, and the application of these properties to drive simple processes. The interface at its current state sheds light on the potential of sound, as an application to assist in user research / documentation, for analytical usage by people involved with environmental acoustics, for visual language developments for movies and animation,as a tool to assist data forensics, revealing more information about the sound of things, spacial position and speech recognition.
