MTech (FWRM)

IIT Guwahati offers the MTech in Flood and Water Resources Management in hybrid mode through the Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Guwahati. The program is designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and applied skills to address complex challenges related to water scarcity, climate variability, and sustainable development.

Emphasizing integrated and sustainable water resource management, the curriculum prepares graduates to develop data-driven solutions for flood risk assessment, hydrological modeling, and climate adaptation strategies across diverse hydrological and socio-economic contexts.

Duration

Minimum 2 years (6 trimesters), extendable up to 5 years (15 trimesters).

110 credits — 62 from coursework + 48 from Capstone Projects.

Eligibility

B.E./B.Tech in Civil/Agricultural Engineering or Allied Disciplines with 1 year professional experience in water resources sector. GATE not required.

Eligibility Criteria

  • 4-year Bachelor's Degree (or Equivalent) in Civil/Agricultural Engineering or Allied Disciplines with at least 60% marks or 6.0/10 CPI from a recognised University.
  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience in the water resources sector.

Documents Required

  • Passport size photographs.
  • Government issued photo identity proof (e.g. Voter ID, Driver's Licence, Passport).
  • Degree certificate for under-graduation along with marksheets of all semesters/years.
  • Professional Experience Certificate in the water resources sector.
  • NOC from employer.

Admission Process & Selection

  • Complete the application form, pay the application fee of ₹500, and submit required documents before the application deadline.
  • Your application will be reviewed by the admissions team at IIT Guwahati to determine eligibility.
  • Upon review, IIT Guwahati will send a payment link of ₹2,000 via email within a week of submitting your application.
  • Candidates will be selected based on an interview/written test conducted by the CE Department.
  • Provisional offer letter will be sent to selected candidates.
Interview Syllabus: All subjects related to Water Resources, Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Fluid Mechanics in the Undergraduate Degree.

Curriculum

  • The MTech in FWRM degree comprises a total of 110 credits — 62 credits from coursework and 48 credits from Capstone Projects.
  • Each trimester includes a minimum of 12 weeks of instruction.
  • Three trimesters per year: T1 (Aug/Sep – Nov/Dec), T2 (Jan/Feb – Apr/May), T3 (May/Jun – Jul/Aug).

Teaching & Assessment

  • Teaching: Fully online. Medium of instruction is English. Each instruction week covers recorded videos, live teaching, and discussion hours. Most teaching is done by IIT Guwahati faculty, supplemented by industrial interactions, guest lectures, and industry courses/certificates.
  • Assessments:
    • Online continuous assessments: practice assignments, graded assignments, quizzes, term projects.
    • Final examination at IIT Guwahati for each course at the end of each trimester (offline, on-campus).

Multi-Exit Options

Although the program entry point is the same for all students, you may choose to exit at different stages by earning the corresponding certificate upon successful completion of the required coursework.

Rejoin when you're ready: Students who exit the program with an early certificate may re-enter after a gap of at least one year to fulfil the remaining requirements for the MTech degree.

Capstone Projects

  • Capstone projects can begin after the completion of minimum 6 courses identified by the department.
  • Projects carry a total of 48 credits and are mandatory for earning the MTech degree.
  • Students may work on projects alongside regular trimester courses after completing 6 courses.
  • Projects will be conducted in hybrid mode — students will be required to regularly visit IIT Guwahati while working on the capstone project.
  • Projects may be carried out in collaboration with other institutions and industries.

Supplementary Examination

Candidates who fail a course must exercise any one of the following options:

  • Re-register for the course and participate in all assessments, including online classes/live sessions; OR
  • Re-register only for the assessments of the course without attending online classes/live sessions, provided the student achieved more than 75% attendance in the previous attempt. OR
  • Backlogged course(s) may also be taken during the summer trimester (May to July).

Flexible Pace: You may register for fewer courses than the prescribed load in a given trimester. To maintain enrollment without registering for any course, pay the Program Continuation Fee of ₹5,000 per trimester. Additional fees may be incurred in case of course repetition.
