Today's students are a confused lot. They are not in a position to decide whether to study to secure a rank or to gain knowledge. Unfortunately, societal pressure to score well
makes them end up with the decision to study to score well.
This could well be a major reason why our country lags behind as far as research is concerned and also why our students are not
able to match up to industry standards when they join work.
There is a lot of difference between preparation for getting ranks and preparing for gaining knowledge. There are many reasons for the students preferring the former. First of all, our
education system is encouraging the ranking system and so parents and society also automatically look at the ranks. As for the students, due to lack of time, they give up on
extracurricular activities to secure this dream of being ranked on top. In addition, because studying for getting marks takes lesser time than studying for gaining knowledge, they settle for
the temporary satisfaction of getting a good rank. With this kind of preparation, they may be satisfied now, but they will surely face problems in the future.
For everlasting success, they need to put some effort and allocate extra time for learning and gaining the knowledge rather than just studying for a good score.
