  • This course introduces different writing systems that exist in the world. About 2300 languages in the world have their own writing systems. In this course, the students are introduced to the history and evolution of writing systems. The course discusses how world's writing systems have evolved primarily from two writing systems- Chinese and Semitic writing systems. This course also discusses the major terminologies that are used in linguistic analysis of writing systems. Family resemblances among different writing systems are also discussed in this course.
