- Dr. M.K. Bhuyan developed the "Virtual Presence Platform" to enable remote participation during the 22nd Convocation of IIT Guwahati, held amid the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. - Dr. M.K. Bhuyan was appointed as an Honorary Visiting Professor in the Department of Computer Science, Chubu University, Japan, for the period April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2025.
- The paper titled “Polyp Shape Recovery using Vascular Border from Single Colonoscopy Image”, authored by Prof. M.K. Bhuyan (Department of EEE, IIT Guwahati), Hiroyasu Usami, Yuji Iwahori (Chubu University, Japan), Aili Wang (Harbin University of Science and Technology, China), Naotaka Ogasawara, and Kunio Kasugai (Chubu University, Japan), received the Best Research Paper Award at the 6th International Conference on Bioimaging (BIOIMAGING 2019), held in Prague, Czech Republic.
- Prof. M.K. Bhuyan was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Academic and Professional Excellence Fellowship (2013–14) to undertake a combination of teaching and research at the School of Engineering and Technology, Purdue University, Indiana, USA.
- National Award for Best Applied Research and Innovation (2012), Conferred by the Government of India for his significant contribution to the development of an AI-based sign language recognition and education framework aimed at supporting the lives of persons with disabilities. - The paper titled “Detection and Classification of Defective Electronic Circuit Boards Using CNN Features and Keypoint Extraction”, authored by M.K. Bhuyan, Yohei Takada, Tokiko Shiina, Hiroyasu Usami, and Yuji Iwahori, received the Best Paper Award at the Ninth International Conference on Pervasive Patterns and Applications (PATTERNS 2017), held in Athens, Greece from February 19–23, 2017.
- Elevated to the grade of IEEE Senior Member. Only, 8% of IEEE’s members hold this grade, which requires extensive experience, and reflects professional maturity and documented achievements of significance.
- Awarded a fellowship by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, to attend and deliver an invited talk at the Indo-French Seminar on Matrix Information Geometries, held at École Polytechnique, Paris, France, 2011.
