IIT Guwahati Hosts the IITG AI Confluence 2024

A Landmark Celebration of Talent, Innovation, and Collaboration in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.

The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IITG) proudly organized the IITG AI Confluence 2024, a flagship event held on December 27–28, 2024. Hosted by the Mehta Family School of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (MFSDS&AI), the two-day gathering celebrated innovation, collaboration, and knowledge-sharing in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Celebrating Knowledge Through Technical Talks
The Confluence featured a stellar lineup of technical talks delivered by renowned experts from academia, industry, and research. These sessions covered a wide array of topics, showcasing AI’s potential to revolutionize diverse domains.

Arka Koner (UIDAI) delved into billion-scale biometric identity systems, while Dr. Sriram Ganapathy (IISc Bangalore, Google Research India) provided insights into the workings of large language models. Dr. Hridoy Jyoti Mahanta (CSIR-NEIST) highlighted the application of AI to build and analyze the chemical space of molecules, and develop solutions for human healthcare, and Dr. Ujjal Kr. Dutta (SatSure Analytics) explored how machine learning is transforming earth observation for societal benefits. Dr. Sumedh R. Risbud (Intel Labs) delivered a thought-provoking talk on neuromorphic computing, emphasizing advancements in hardware design inspired by neural processing to better support AI systems. On the other hand, Prof. Parimal C. Bhattacharjee (Retired Professor, Gauhati University) educated participants about the rich and unique wildlife heritage of Northeast India. He highlighted the critical need for understanding, documenting, and leveraging this biodiversity to build a sustainable future. Prof. Bhattacharjee also challenged participants to explore how AI could be applied to address pressing issues in conservation.

Empowering Students with Engaging Activities
The two-day extravaganza created an inspiring platform for students to showcase their skills and creativity through a variety of activities.
    • AI Datathon witnessed participants solving real-world challenges using advanced data science techniques,
    • AI Debate sparked lively discussions on the dual-edged impact of AI on society,
    • AI Quiz tested participants’ knowledge of AI concepts, history, and applications in an engaging format,
    • In Poster Session, students presented innovative research and projects, demonstrating the depth of talent,
    • PhD scholars delivered 5-minute Lightning Talks, covering diverse topics such as medical imaging, language models, and privacy in AI systems.
    • The Confluence beautifully merged technology and creativity, with the Cultural Evening being a testament to the diverse talents of IITG students.

A standout feature of the event was the overwhelming participation of students enrolled in IITG’s online BSc (Hons.) in DS&AI program, who traveled from across the country to attend. Their passion and talent were on full display as they actively engaged in a variety of activities alongside their on-campus peers. For many, this was their first time stepping onto the IITG campus, previously known only through pictures and social media conversations. This visit sparked inspiration, opening doors to future projects, innovative ideas, dynamic clubs, and transformative developments.

A Highlight: Panel Discussion on AI Workforce Development
A major highlight of the event was the panel discussion titled "Building the AI Workforce of Tomorrow: Skills, Systems, and Opportunities." The session brought together a distinguished panel of experts, including Dr. Sriram Ganapathy (IISc Bangalore, Google Research India), Dr. Sumedh R. Risbud (Intel Labs), Dr. Ujjal Kr. Dutta (SatSure Analytics), Prof. Shyamanta M. Hazarika (IIT Guwahati), and Prof. Ratnajit Bhattacharjee (IIT Guwahati). The discussion explored the evolving landscape of AI-driven careers, emphasizing the skills and systems required to build a future-ready workforce. Panelists shared valuable insights on interdisciplinary collaboration, the integration of AI into various domains, and the ethical considerations surrounding AI’s growing influence. Their perspectives provided participants with actionable advice and inspiration to engage meaningfully with the dynamic AI ecosystem.

Building Connections Through Networking and Discussions
The Confluence was not only about knowledge-sharing but also about fostering meaningful connections. Open House Sessions provided a platform for students and researchers to interact directly with experts, sparking insightful discussions and potential collaborations. Informal networking opportunities during tea breaks and dinners further enriched the experience, creating a vibrant environment for exchanging ideas.

A Commitment to DS&AI Excellence
The IITG AI Confluence exemplified the MFSDS&AI’s mission to advance education and research in AI. With programs like the BTech in DS&AI, the online BSc (Hons) in DS&AI, the MTech in Data Science, and the PhD, the School continues to lead in building a foundation for innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration. This event reinforced IIT Guwahati’s position as a hub for transformative research and impactful education in Data Science and AI. IIT Guwahati extends heartfelt gratitude to the speakers, participants, organizers, and volunteers who made the AI Confluence a resounding success. Their enthusiasm and dedication created an unforgettable event, laying the groundwork for future milestones in Data Science and AI innovation and collaboration.

The event concluded with a promise, like algorithms aligning in harmony, to converge again and script new stories of innovation and discovery.
