A new entrant to the campus might encounter some strange terms, that violate all principles of language (both hindi and english). To make life easier, here are a few words, knowing which will make your conversations with your fellow mates and seniors easier.

Alcher (noun.)

/alcher/
Short for Alcheringa, IITG’s annual cultural fest. The biggest cultural fest in the north east. It is still debatable whether Alcher really is the 2nd biggest cultural fest in India as they claim. One thing is for sure. Getting a certificate for working in alcheringa is just as hyped up as the fest itself.

“Abe Alcher ka time hai. Shave kar le, kya pata kaunsi bandi pat jaye!”

DC (noun.)

/dee-cee/
The lifeline of all the IITG hostel communities. DC has your back 24x7. Whenever you need it and for whatever you need it. Private windows, Torrents and eBooks of your course curriculum are a thing of the past ever since DC came around. Basically a hub of files connected by LAN. You’ll find yourself dreaming about the download speeds years after you leave IIT G :)

“Abe ye toh bahut acha hai, kidhar mila?” “DC pe jaa, sab milega bro!!”

Bakchodi (verb.)

/buk-chodi/
Any activity which wastes time efficiently and without regret (while you’re doing it that is). There are some people who master this art by the time they leave college. For them - “There ain’t no youtube cat video long enough”

“Bakchodi mat kar yaar, notes dede wapas. Kal subah exam dene bhi jana hai”

Junta (noun.)

/junta/
The go-to word if you have no idea how to address a group of people more than you care to count.This has an enormous range, from facebook groups to large groups of people in the library the week before the endsems.

“Audi mai kuch chal raha hai kya? Bahut junta dikh rahi hai”

Tut (noun.)

/teut/
Short for tutorial, the single most powerful thing that can wake you up early in the morning. If this fails, then well, good afternoon it is.

“Bhai kal ka tut kiya kya? Solutions dede please!”

TA (noun.)

/tee-ay/
Short for Teaching Assistant. Mostly PhD/MTech students, they have a certain level of authority in a course. TAs may vary widely in behaviour and are found in all shapes and sizes.

"Lab kaisa gaya?" "Kuch nai aa raha tha, par TA chill tha toh bach gaya."

Chaggi (noun.)

/chuggi/
Basically the number 6 when used as a substitute for your SPI or CPI. This accomplishment can be achieved by anyone, the guy whose first book was ‘Five Point Someone’ and was heavily influenced by it or the guy who is one of the god coders of the campus. Mostly the former. The key identifiers to people with such an achievement is a sweaty forehead during placements.

“Bhai iss sem chaggi lagi hai maths mein, SPI toh gyi”
     

Hag dena (verb)

/hug they-na./
  Though literally translating to the act of excreting, this phrase is used in common language to indicate a complete failure in a particular event or field.  

“ “Bhai Maths ke paper mai  Hag Diya maine”  

Fakka (noun.)

/fuc-ka./
The F grade. It is denoted by an F in your grade card. However this F isn’t "fantastic" at all. It’s an F that you totally, desperately, insanely want to avoid.  
 
 “Yaar mera MA102 me fakka lag gya”  

SAC (noun.)

/sack/
Short for Student Activity Centre .A good place for students to hang out and work together but mainly occupied by students who have no better way to pass their time but to sit in the AC and use the WiFi.

“Tu ne suna? SAC ab 24x7 khula rahega.”

Chaapna (verb.)

/chaapna/
The act of copying during an examination or otherwise. This act is frowned at and can automatically fail you in a course.

“Chaapna nahi chahiye tha yaar, ab summer me phirse course lena padega"  

Dassna (verb.)

/dussna./
Inspired by the manner in which a snake bites, this word is used to describe the act of boring someone to the point of mortal peril or sainthood, whichever comes first.

“Abbey yaar isko kisne bulaya, itna dassta hai”  

Acads (noun.)

/Acads./
Anything and everything pertaining to your curriculum and grades. The reason you came to IIT(or not).  
      
“Iss sem toh acads ki lagi padi hai yaar." "Koi nai bhai, endsem mein cover-up kar lenge.”

Bond (noun.)

/bond./
A person known for his fully functional skills over any particular field. From Computer science to Counter strike.         

“Abey wo bond aadmi hai, sambhal lega"

God (noun.)

/god./
God refers to someone who has achieved Bond status in multiple things and becomes a God in general.         

“Bhai tu toh God level banda hai yaar, humein padha de”

Machana(verb.)

/much-aana./
Refers to any activity or achievement (big or small) which is done here at IIT G. Literally. If there’s one phrase you can safely text any random person in IITG at any given time is “Machaya yaar!” Given the broad usage of the term, it is sure to make sense with your last message or something that individual has done recently.
