Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is a globally recognized, department in science and technology with a growing list of accolades earned nationally and internationally. It offers the 4 year Bachelor's programme - Chemical Science and Technology (a.k.a CST).

Course Structure

The structure of the undergraduate CST course consists of a package of standard undergraduate Chemistry courses, designed to give a rudimentary understanding of most of the basic and popular areas of research to the students. Studies deal with Quantum Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Environmental, Physical, Organic, Chemical Kinetics, Computational Chemistry, etc. However this being an engineering course rather than one on theoretical chemistry , the traditional Chemistry courses are bundled along with relevant courses from other disciplines such as those in Mechanical Engineering like Heat and Mass Transfer, Fluids, etc. Along with this, students can take electives from the Chemistry department and other departments from the sixth semester to follow any particular interests one might have.

Future Opportunities

Opportunities for students after graduation are varied. A doctorate degree is a necessity if the students want to be researchers. IIT Guwahati undergraduates have joined the top schools in US and Europe. Recent graduates have made it to some of the best research groups in Europe. It is also common for students to get graduate positions at top Indian research institutes. Many students have been known to go for management and getting admission into top IIMs and ISB. In addition, some students go for higher education in other fields such as UPSC. The placement records are better than most other branches in IITG with students getting placed in many Analytics, Finance, Software development companies such as Goldman Sachs, American Express, Wipro along with more branch oriented companies like Schulmberger. Many have also been placed in management positions in various companies.
