Civil Engineering (CE) has been a part of IIT Guwahati since its early days and is one of the largest departments in campus both in terms of lab facilities and subdisciplines. The department has grown many folds over the years, be it in cutting edge research or organized departmental activities. The Association of Civil Engineers (ACE), a solid body of students and professors is actively indulged in smooth conduction of various departmental and interdepartmental workshops ranging from field trips to research conferences.
The department has been actively involved in building a strong foundation for interdisciplinary research and development with its strong technical advisory committee and highly qualified faculty. The department has also continually maintained a strong link with academic and research institutes around the globe and consultancy in infrastructure industry.

Course Structure

The bachelor’s course of Civil Engineering is designed in a comprehensive way to allow the student to learn about a wide range of applications in different domains. This specialization comprises of the subjects such as Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Surveying, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Technology and Management.
The Course Structure comprises of related laboratory courses and the campus turns out to be the best place especially for this department. Unlike other institutes, it provides a rich resource base (lakes, treatment plants, soil and rock variety etc inside the campus) for smooth conduction of experiments. The number and such variety of courses exposes a student to every engineering aspect of an industry providing great future prospects.

The versatile nature of this branch gives one an opportunity to step into the research field at top notch institutes to engineering and management profiles in infrastructure companies during the campus placement.Several students from previous batches have landed in top tier institutes to pursue masters (New York University(NYU), University of Hong Kong,university of toronto,Harvard Business School etc) and others in corporate industries (L&T,Schlumberger,The prestigious Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and PSU ( IOCL, HPCL, Power Grid).
