PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences:
The PhD programme of the department is an area of vibrant research pursuit. All academic streams of the department, namely Economics, English, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, History & Archeology and Political Science conduct PhD research in accordance with the expertise of faculty members. PhD in the area of Development Studies is also advertised. Regular full time students with NET or GATE qualification receive financial assistance. PhD scholars receive travel and accommodation grants for attending academic seminars and conferences, subject to the rules of the institute.
Admission:
Candidates can apply under various categories (a single candidate is advised not to apply in more than one category). A Regular full time candidate receives financial assistantship from the institute if he/she has qualified the NET or GATE (candidates without NET/GATE qualification should not apply in the regular full time category). A full time sponsored candidate receives no assistantship. She is required to possess professional experience in relevant areas for at least one year and has to produce sponsorship letter from the organization she has been working with. Part-time PhD students are also admitted. They must possess a minimum of one year’s experience in relevant fields. A no-objection certificate (NOC) from the employer in the specified format (see advertisement) is required. In the self-financed category a student can work either full time or part time, and has to have a minimum of one year professional experience in a relevant area. She receives no assistantship from the institute. For more information please refer to the PhD advertisement of the institute.
Students graduating from the MA Development Studies programme of the department can apply for PhD in non-regular categories with the minimum professional experience. Candidates who have passed MA/MSc from any of the IITs with a minimum of 8 point CPI will be provided the institute financial assistantship, if they do not receive assistantship from other sources. They should apply in regular category.
